The total cost of ownership of a car includes operating costs like fuel, maintenance/repairs, insurance, as well as financial costs like interest, depreciation, and sales tax.  Rather than speculate on the importance of each factor, let’s look at the actual 5-year total cost of ownership reported by publications like Forbes and Consumers Union this year, and highlight some of the outstanding vehicles in each class:

Small cars
The leaders in this category include Toyota’s Yaris, Scion’s xD, Honda’s Fit, and Chevrolet’s Aveo.  The Aveo’s issues with repair problems are offset by the 100,000 mile warranty but you should do further research before considering this vehicle.

Medium Sized Sedans
Toyota Prius was the winner in this category

SUVs
The small SUVs in this category include the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Honda Element.
The larger SUVs in this category include the Toyota 4Runner and Lexus Rx.

Luxury Sedans
The winners in this category are the Lincoln MKZ and Infiniti M35
