How to Stay Focussed on the Big PictureJun 7th, 2008 | By Jose DeJesus MD | Category: Business
There’s so much to do and so little time to do it all, and it’s easy to get so caught up in the minutia that we lose sight of the big picture.
What is the big picture?
It’s that vision we have of our business or professional practice. The goals we want to achieve and the level of success that we are working toward.
What can you do when the day-to-day tasks threaten to blot out the big picture?
1. Stop and take a step back.
2. Put down your to-do list and bring out your business plan
3. Remember the big picture and make sure you are doing something to get closer to your goals
The big picture isn’t static. It changes as your business grows. To find out what you big picture is, ask yourself one question and make the answer as broad as you can:
What is my goal?
Different people have different goals and, over time, we may find that our own goals have changed. Where do you want to be and what do you want to be doing in 5 years? In 10 years?
Now take up your to-do list and look at it:
With your big picture fresh in your mind, what tasks can you delegate or eliminate from the list? This doesn’t mean your should sacrifice quality, but it does mean that you should look for ways to keep your big picture as your main priority.
What things on your list do you love? Hate? Wish you could add to your list? How will they help you achieve your goal? What do they all have in common? Set priorities based on what things get you closer to your goals and which things you must do personally rather than delegate.
Questioning helps you clarify the path you are on.
You may be happily surprised to find that why you were busy taking care of the day-to-day tasks that your business has grown too big to handle alone. Or, that you are focusing on things that won’t help you achieve your goal. In either case, by focusing on your big picture, you should be able to determine what needs to be done to get you where you want to go.
