Time Thieves

by Jose DeJesus MD on May 25, 2008

Time is a valuable business resource.  Once it’s gone, there is no getting it back and if you are like most business owners, you need every minute that you can get.  Don’t let time slip through your fingers.  Recognize time wasting activities and take them out of your day using these time management tips.  Here are the dirty half-dozen time thieves:

1.    Poor Planning leaves you without a clear path to achieving your goals.  A to-do list for each day can save you hours of wasted effort.  Prioritize your list for the best results.

2.    Procrastination of necessary tasks can leave you in a time crunch later on.  Follow your to-do list and carry over any uncompleted tasks to the next day.  Follow up until each task is completed.

3.    Interruptions come in many flavors: family, friends, and co-workers can devour your time.  Your time is valuable.  It is up to you to determine if the interruption is necessary or a waste of time.

4.    Lack of Delegation can waste hours of your time.  If it is something that someone else can do, then let them do it.  If it is not productive use of your time as a business owner it should probably be delegated.

5.    Unnecessary meetings are those in which nothing productive is achieved.  Plan your meetings to get the highest possible return on your time investment.  A productive meeting is one that you leave with a clear plan of action.

6.    Poor Organization can be a huge waste of time.  Having to search for a document or the tools you need to complete your tasks is time better spent completing your task.  Tools should be within arms reach and documents should be filed for easy retrieval.

Managing your time allows you to achieve the tasks necessary to the success and growth of your business.  Make the most of your time by avoiding activities that aren’t productive.

These are some excellent tips! And remember - if you have no staff to delegate to, you can always consider working with a virtual assistant.
