If you’re like me, you take a lot of digital pictures with your camera and then dump them onto your computer when the camera memory starts getting full. The only problem is that the file names are pretty lame (like AAA1010, AAA1011…). Of course, you can create a folder with a descriptive name like CancunVacation, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could name the individual files Cancun1010, Cancun1011… so that if you drag a file to your desktop or someplace to work on it, it has a more descriptive name?
Renaming dozens of files one file at a time is more trouble than it’s worth, but I’ve found a free tool you can use to rename a collection of files based on a pattern that you set up, like the example given above.
The tool is called mess rename. It only works on Windows, and you can download it here.
