Motivating your top performing employees and giving them proper feedback is as important or more important than giving feedback to underperforming employees, but too often the top performers are neglected and we assume that they know they are working hard and doing the right things. Nothing could be further than the truth.
Give your top performers the same consideration as those who need correction - top performers are always looking to improve themselves and take on new challenges. These people deserve honest, helpful, and actionable feedback.
- If your top performers would benefit from continuing education, help identify those courses that would be most helpful to them and, if appropriate, provide funding for the training - properly presented, this will be valued much more than a simple bonus payment.
- Identify opportunities for them to grow and improve themselves - this may include identifying new responsibilities that reflect their personal preferences and life motivations.
- Show your appreciation and let them know how their efforts contribute to the success of your organization.
