Disability Insurance: Is it a good choice for medical students, residents, and fellows?

by Jose DeJesus MD on December 7, 2007

The Association of American Medical Colleges recently ruled that all medical schools should be required to offer disability insurance for medical students.  Columnist Andy Paul makes an interesting case for why medical students may benefit from disability insurance.

In his article, Mr. Paul states that disability insurance for medical students is a prudent investment choice for future doctors who are often acquiring huge amounts of student loan debt to cover the cost of tuition and incidental costs during their schooling.

A disability incurred during this time may leave a student unable to complete their education – even if it is for a short time.  However, the student is still responsible for paying back their student loans.  Disability insurance, which is often reasonably priced for students, can help offset these costs.  For the same reasons, residents and fellows should carry disability insurance
